All about Underarm Deodorant 01

If you are looking for a deodorant that is completely free of harmful chemicals then the Wild & Precious Deodorant 01 is for you. It is made from plant based and mineral ingredients plus beeswax. It has a wonderful light, fresh perfume with woody and citrus notes and it melts into the skin beautifully. Deodorant 01 is hardworking, too, more than capable of drying perspiration, neutralising bacteria and masking unpleasant body odours.

How to use Underarm Deodorant 01

Before application wash under your arms with soap (a quick plug here for our wonderful Shampoo/Skin Wash 01, which is made from wild harvested soapwort roots), then take off the lid and apply Deodorant 01. It should melt into your skin and you can help the process by massaging in with the tips of your fingers. If you find the texture of your Deodorant 01 is too soft, just keep it in a cool place, even the fridge.

Of special note

You would think that creating a natural underarm deodorant would be pretty simple, but it is actually quite complicated. There aren’t that many ingredients capable of doing the job, which don’t also pose a health risk. Plus, whether a deodorant (natural or otherwise) works, will be greatly influenced by individual body chemistry (this, in turn, is influenced by age, gender, hormone fluctuations, diet, health and a dozen other factors). Wild & Precious Deodorant 01 is our answer to the problem. We have found that it works for the majority of users. If, however, it doesn’t work for you then you may like to try Wild & Precious Deodorant 02 (which is a roll-on rather than a stick) or you can always ask for a full refund (see our guarantee) if you let us know within 60 days of receipt. You could also try using our Virgin Cold Pressed Coconut Oil (which, interestingly, doesn’t leave you smelling of coconut) and some customers swear by our Rose Water 01. You’ll find more recipes and solutions in our DIY guide.

About the ingredients

Shea Butter

We include shea butter because it is so good for the skin and because it helps neutralise body odour. How does it work? Well, the presence of cinnamic acid, tocopherols, and phytosterols in shea butter in addition to compounds such as quercetin, epicatechin gallate, gallocatechin, epigallocatechin give it important antioxidant and UV-B absorption properties. With its rich texture, antioxidants and skin-replenishing fatty acids (stearic and linoleic), it has a wonderful emollient, moisturising and conditioning effect. It is very gentle and so suitable for dry, sensitive and irritated skin.

Virgin Coconut Oil

In a (coco)nut shell we include this for its antimicrobial effect on the skin – in plain English, it kills less pleasant body odours. There are, by the way, recipes for the use of coconut oil that date back a staggering 4000 years. It has been shown in studies to have a moisturising and emollient effect, coating the skin and thus slowing down transepidermal water loss and increasing hydration within the stratum corneum and top layers of the dermis.

Kaolin Clay

Why have we used Kaolin clay in our underarm deodorant? The clay is comprised predominantly of the mineral kaolinite, a hydrated aluminum silicate which has drying, anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects in addition to protecting the skin.

Bicarbonate Soda

We use Sodium Bicarbonate (aka baking soda) to control the pH balance and because it has been shown to help dry, protect and buffer the skin.

Cocoa Butter

Cocoa butter has long been used as a natural moisturiser and barrier and this is borne out by plenty of scientific research that clearly shows it has a positive effect on skin structure in terms of tone and elasticity. It is also prized because it doesn’t irritate the skin.

Beeswax has many beneficial qualities, but we use it in our underarm deodorant because it has been proven to stop natural underarm odours from – well – making themselves smelt.

Arrowroot Powder

Arrowroot is absorbent. For example, it absorbs unpleasant odours.

How we make our Underarm Deodorant 01

Making Underarm Deodorant 01 is a tricky business that requires accurate timing and a steady hand. First, we have to heat the beeswax and also the butters before gently stirring in the other ingredients. Then we have to pour it into the containers before it sets. When we get it wrong – as occasionally happens – we sometimes indulge in a few ancient, artisanal swear words.

Safety Information

Nowadays, manufacturers have become so frightened of litigation that their products come with dire warnings and super cautious advice. We won’t be left out of this! If you swallow this product contact a poison centre or doctor, immediately. Ditto if you get it into your eye. However, just so you know, the ingredients are all natural and – in the quantities present – pretty unlikely to cause any health issues.
